Apart from the controversial box set "The Sixpack" published in 1987, ZZ Top has not offered anything to its fans for five long years now. After the phenomenal success of his two previous opus, it is not surprising that the Texans have given themselves a break, but this one is beginning to seem long to all fans. So here comes "Recycle" in this year 1990.

Billy Gibbons & Cie have decided not to change the recipe that made the success of the "Eliminator" and "Afterburner". Their synthetic hard-blues-rock is still relevant and it still draws its share of titles with unstoppable efficiency and catchy riffs and choruses. Among the latter are the unavoidable singles 'Give It Up' and 'Doubleback' which will be at the top of the charts for several weeks. The latter also serves as the soundtrack to the credits of the third installment of the Back to the Future saga, in which the members of the band also make a brief appearance.

No time out in this opus, nor even a weak title, but a strong feeling of already heard. 'Concrete And Steel' crushes everything in its opening passage but still strongly follows the recipe of 'Gimme All Your Lovin'. The swing of 'My Head's In Mississippi' is a real killer but it looks like an adaptation of 'La Grange'. The scathing 'Decision Or Collision' is in line with 'Dirty Dog' and 'Woke Up With Wood', and '2,000 Blues' is the little brother of 'I Need You Tonight' and 'Rough Boy'. And if the other titles suffer from less obvious similarities, the mold of fabrication remains easily identifiable and the ingredients remain the same as those that have made the group's worldwide success for a decade.

Rarely has an album justified its name so well. ZZ Top recycles with undeniable talent and efficiency and the result is still flawless. However, it shows an inspiration that is running out of steam and highlights the imperative need for the three bearded men to renew themselves as quickly as possible before becoming their own caricature. Fans will appreciate and enjoy a new salvo of hyper-catchy titles but the Texas legend must offer a real challenge if it does not want to lose its credibility.
