Where does an artist's inspiration come from? From his personal torments? From his fears and phobias? From his addictions? From his emotions ? Or is it an introspective attempt to stay in touch with his dreams and subconscious? These metaphysical questions are the basis of the fourth album of Caligula's Horse. With such a synopsis, only talent can avoid the pitfall of the pompous and pretentious concept-album.

And the Brisbane band has no shortage of talent. In just six years, the Australians have risen to the forefront of modern progressive metal and have opened for Mastodon, Opeth, Pain Of Salvation and many others. With "In Contact", Caligula's Horse takes it to a new level and confirms all the hopes placed in him.

First of all by illustrating his ambitious intentions with poetic texts well anchored in reality, with sometimes surprisingly political and violent accents, in particular the poem 'Inertia And The Weapon Of The Wall' which denounces corruption and injustice. Then and especially by developing compositions of an impressive melodic richness, enhanced by the dazzling vocals of Jim Grey and the luminous and inspired guitar of Sam Vallen. In addition to the virtuosity of the quintet's two founders, the arrival of a new drummer, Josh Griffin, undeniably brings to the combo's music the subtlety that was sometimes lacking in the previous opus, "Bloom".

"In Contact" is a tightrope walker album, a perfect balance between metal and progressive rock. Powerful and heavy tracks ('The Cannon's Mouth', 'Songs For No One', 'Dream The Dead') are mixed with intimate acoustic ballads ('Love Conquers All', 'Capulet'). The djent titles ('Will's Song', 'Fill My Heart') are mixed with pop songs ('The Hands Are The Hardest'). The mix and variety of the ambiences sound obvious thanks to jubilant and addictive melodies. The album is a lesson of modern progressive music and closes with the enormous 'Graves', a fifteen-minute gem, a perfect synthesis of the group's unbridled inspiration, a real auditory orgasm provoked by the embrace between the subtlety of the vocals and the soaring guitars, sublimated by the intrusion of a saxophone.

With this album, Caligula's Horse doesn't just offer us their best album to date. The group enters definitively of plain foot in the court of the biggest thanks to the richness and the intelligence of its compositions. "In Contact" is an addictive and captivating record, a real treat for lovers of modern melodic progressive metal.
