A little more than four years after the noticed "Lost in Perception", the Polish sextet of Retrospective returns with "Re:search". The remarkable stability of the line-up, unchanged since 2008, is in principle the promise of finding qualities that have previously hit the mark.

There is a certain pleasure in Retrospective, that of not being able to classify the group into well-defined boxes. The incisive tone carried by a well-established rhythm section and sharp guitars draws the style towards metal ('Last Breath','Rest Another Time','The Wisest Man on Earth'), but Retrospective does not limit itself to this dynamism, sometimes evolving in an atmosphere close to Anathema ('Right Way' and its pretty rise), while using older references: difficult not to hear Pink Floyd touches in the psychedelism of 'The Wisest Man...., very "Ummagumma", or in the shuffle solo of "Look in the Mirror", which evokes the "One of These Days" of "Meddle". The listener will also find references to their compatriots in Riverside, with this very particular use of the bass ('Rest Another Time'). All these influences are perfectly digested / integrated to give tracks in a rather short format - the last track only owes its 7 minutes length to its extended intro -, very diversified and in constant evolution, which brings the combo back to the progressive genre, even if the instrumental interventions do not go in the direction of duration and complexity.

The only reservation to bring to a record that cannot be accused of monotony is Jakub Roszak's vocals, which may seem linear on some tracks, anaesthetizing a little the vocal line ('Look in the Mirror', for example). He seems more comfortable on the dynamic parts, when his voice takes on a little grain ('Last Breath'). To overcome this disadvantage, Retrospective has the intelligence to bring Beata Lagoda to the microphone, and the female presence brings a certain charm ('Standbay','Right Way') that may be missing in some ways.

With this varied and multi-genre record, accessible to a wide audience, Retrospective once again proves the quality of the Polish school. To be enjoyed without moderation!
