With "Beyond", Freedom Call had succeeded in returning to a classic melodic speed metal without sounding old-fashioned and keeping the youthful freshness that characterizes it. After more than 15 years of career and 8 albums, Chris Bay's band is perfectly aware that it will never be a tenor of the metal scene. So it pleases itself and its fans with a music that brings joy to life. This is what is on the program of this ninth album, "Master Of Light". The band keep this positivity which made its fame. Certainly the cover of the record with this shirtless, tattooed and bodybuilt warrior looks a bit old-fashioned but we must not make the mistake of misjudging this record for that, and let the music speak for itself.

The opener, 'Metal Is For Everyone', has all the qualities that we use to like from this band: a unifying chorus, an intense rhythm with this concern of the melody which marks, this vocals and these choruses so clear and pure and a break. The continuation of the album will evolve in this fresh and light universe without tiring with a beautiful variety of tracks without weak times, Freedom Call varying the pleasures well. Thus speed metal is in the spotlight with 'Hammer Of Gods' which goes at 100 per hour in a pure happy metal spirit, just like 'Kings Rise And Fall' or 'Hail The Legend', 'Rock The Nations' and 'High Up' which are great successes thanks to the joyful melodies.

But Freedom Call isn't just about speed, it intelligently varies the pleasures and offers more power metal songs with a touch of heroïc fantasy. In this idea 'Masters Of Light' benefits from careful arrangements reminiscent of Kamelot or Rhapsody with epic choruses. 'A World Beyond' is another quality piece, with a very present keyboard that delivers a nice duel with the guitars. With 'Emerald Skies' the band mixes its two identities with an epic side tinged with folk. Finally the ballad 'Cradle Of Angels' is a nice moment of grace, certainly classic but making speak the emotion and allowing Bay to shine with a tasty little 70's spirit.

Freedom Call doesn't reinvent himself with 'Master Of Light' but he excels in his genre and delivers us a delightful record with a freshness that feels good. The German band continues to trace its path, far from the fashions but with a constancy in the quality.
