Between Ayreon's first two productions ("The Final Experiment" and "Actual Fantasy") comes a curious album, the author of which is not even mentioned on the cover. Twenty years later, the mystery is solved: Arjen Lucassen relaxes between two ambitious progressive productions and has as a "curious hobby" to readapt old hits (between 1965 and 1970) that marked his adolescence. The 2016 version is no longer anonymous and is now enriched with four bonus tracks. However, no information is given on the line-up of the album.
For this "Strange Hobby", Arjen invited universal celebrities: the Beatles, Pink Floyd period Barett, the Who, the Rolling Stones, Status Quo ... for a work that lies between the cover and the tribute: the versions are extremely close to the originals, Lucassen having mostly only dynamized the rhythm with a guitar with soft metal accents. As most of the tracks have a rock connotation, the Batave plays on velvet: with a modern and neat production (a constant for him), the songs have taken a good little boost (particularly obvious for 'Ruby Tuesday' and 'Catch the Wind'). The bet is more daring when Arjen rubs with psychedelism ('In the Room of Percussion', better in its more rock version with Peter Daltrey) or with the ballad (the magic of the choruses of 'Norwegian Wood' fades a little).
But overall, without taking any risks, Arjen Lucassen offers us a beautiful little compilation from the late 60s, skillfully revitalized. Friendly, but really anecdotal.... - Official website
