If we consider " Black Like Sunday " released in 2003 for what it is, namely a compilation of compositions written before the band's recording debut, it had been four years since King's X had released anything new. The last studio album, Manic Moonlight, did not meet with unanimous approval from the fans, so one could believe the band had been on a downward slope since Ear Candy (1996).
As a big fan of this band, I want to reassure all the fans. King's X has found a new energy and a new youth and signs here its best album since Dogman (1994). With Michael Wagener at the controls, the production is finally up to scratch with a clean and clear sound, an element that had been sorely lacking in the trio's last productions.
We thus find all that makes the strength of the Texans' music: this subtle mix between pop and hard rock, this groove so characteristic carried by Doug Pinnick at the top of his shape and this capacity to release very short tracks but so rich.
Most of the tracks are potential hits. We start strong with Alone, raging and direct, who launches the album to perfection. The continuation is more nuanced, with pearls at all levels: "Stay" with an unstoppable riff, "If" or "Fly", superb and very melodic pieces, "Sooner or later", longer, floating and endowed with a solo all in feeling, "Bibop" very groovy or the magnificent acoustic ballad "Honesty".
On this opus, King's X seems to have enjoyed himself by imposing no limits. The mix of many musical styles is a success, which makes it a fairly all-purpose album that can please a wide audience. Let's hope now that this work brings this band out of the relative anonymity in which it is... - Official website
