"This 'Believe' is innovative enough to conquer a few new fans, but not too revolutionary not to offend the regulars."

A new opus by the neo-prog dinosaurs that are the members of Pendragon is always an event, as it allows some critics to cry plagiarism of "Genesis", while fans are feasting in advance.

The opening of the album on the eponymous title is surprising: sound effects, female and male voices chanting, 'talk box' and an invitation to join the dance floor... And we continue with 'No place for the innocent' which starts with a very catchy American country-rock fake tune with a finale that reminds us (if necessary) that Nick Barett is a great guitarist in both acoustic and electric.

It's not 'The Wisdom Of Solomon', the next track that will contradict this last assertion, as Nick does a little demonstration of Latimer-style weeping guitar, then of Hispanic acoustic guitar. Splendid! This mix of neo Pendragonian and Latin influence gives a pleasant result. The sequel is a long piece (more than 20 mn) in four parts, 'The wishing well'. Very symphonic beginning (thank you Mr Nolan) with spoken text, then a more acoustic part, a very rich and powerful passage in the line of the great titles of Pendragon, and finally a very camelian conclusion.

Of the last two titles, I will retain only the quality of play of the guitar where Nick Barett makes a demonstration of feeling. What about the other musicians? The invasive Nolan knows how to be discreet and efficient on this album and the duo Gee-Smith works wonderfully, without embellishment but with an implacable presence.

So this 'Believe' is innovative enough to win over a few new fans, but not too revolutionary not to offend the regulars. It's a moving, strong, restful, bewitching, beautiful, melancholic, surprising, reassuring record, all that at the same time. To be listened to urgently!
