With "Blessed Are The Sick", Morbid Angel established himself as a master of the death metal genre, which was gaining in stature in the early 90s. Their eagerly-awaited new album confirmed the Americans' stranglehold on the genre. The duo formed by David Vincent and Trey Azagthoth might have felt a certain amount of pressure to deliver their new work, but, as if inhabited by a superior, invisible force, they transcend themselves on "Covenant", the third act of their work.
Forged in the same mold as its predecessor, "Covenant" is a record that gives the impression of opening the Necronomicon to plunge into a horrific parallel world. There are ten tracks on this demonic package, all cut from pure, uncompromising death metal. Trey handles the guitars alone, and does so with surgical care, while Vincent exudes enormous charisma in his powerful, husky yet clear vocals, filled with palpable hatred. Behind this duo, we mustn't forget Pete Sandoval, who does a remarkable job on drums, all power and feeling.
It's difficult, if not inconceivable, to single out one track over another, so much so that "Covenant" is a coherent whole, an entire block that may frighten the novice. Just remember that songs like 'Rapture', 'The Lion's Den' and 'Pain Divine' are death metal monuments. And the instrumental interlude 'Nar Mattaru' adds enormously to the album's mystical ambience.
Morbid Angel's "Covenant" is a milestone not only in their career, but also in death metal. This record, which has found its place in the pantheon of extreme metal, is highly recommended for anyone wishing to discover this musical genre in its purest form. - Official website
