Starbreaker is the name of the project that brings together a member of TNT, singer Tony Harnell, the drummer John Macaluso (well known to have also contributed to Ark), producer-bassist Fabrizio Grossi and Magnus Karlsson officiating here on guitar and keyboards. I was looking forward to this first record all the more since the return of TNT last year with the acclaimed "My Religion" had left me seriously hungry.
If one can legitimately wonder what will differentiate such a project from "My religion", the first track "Die for you" brings a first answer: this track is completely in the line of TNT (vocals, catchy melody) but with an extra power which, and this is the essential point of the album, will never fall back before the end of "Save Yourself".
Starbreaker strings together the tracks where other bands run out of steam from the third on. This richness in melodies is such that it takes a few listenings to appreciate the record at its true value. The choruses of the first tracks seem the most memorable ('Lies' one sounds like something you've heard before), but those of "Underneath a falling sky" or "Turn it off" have absolutely nothing to envy them, and "Transparent" and its chorus with multiple catchphrases is perhaps the most beautiful of the successes of this opus which has a lot of them.
On the other hand, among this flood of unstoppable choruses, the instrumental "Dragonfly" seems useless and above all badly placed just before the last track. Another reservation concerns the somewhat monolithic aspect of the disc at first listening.
For his first record, Starbreaker offered us a little nugget of melodic hard rock to classify between TNT and Pink Cream 69, a jubilant and energizing album and, maybe, one of the best of the kind released in these times. - Official website
