2015 will be the year of Angra's eighth album. Eight albums in their 23-year career, five years after the release of the last album. No one has missed it, the Brazilians are taking their time to compose. "Secret Garden" is its name and once again it is a concept-album which this time revolves around a spiritual question: can something that neither the eyes nor the senses can perceive be considered non-existent?

So we left Angra in 2010 on an "Aqua" that received a lukewarm reviews from Music Waves columnists, just like the previous album, "Aurora Consurgens". So the Brazilians, since the escape of their divine vocalist Andre Matos, would be unable to offer compositions of the calibre of those appearing on "Angels Cry" or "Holy Land"? Well, expect a surprise, "Secret Garden" is a work that reaches the qualities of these two glorious elders.

Indeed, while remaining imbued with her desire to share her heavy prog mixed with the characteristic sounds of Brazilian folklore and punctuated by touches of classical music, Angra has here, with finesse and talent, studiously focused on melodic work. "Secret Garden" is certainly dotted with hardened steel rhythms, impressive guitar playing of technicality and inventiveness, abundant percussion imbued with a rich diversity but above all it is hyper-melodic. Among the new features and curiosities, we will note the arrival of Bruno Valverde behind drums and his impact on the more modern side of the compositions, the appearances of Simone Simons (Epica) and Doro on two songs and the cover of a Police title.

2015 could therefore be the year in which the Brazilians return to the forefront. It is all the harm that we wish them so much "Secret Garden" breathes envy, talent and work well done. A powerful and subtle album, heavy and progressive, rhythmic, inventive, sensitive and melodic. What more could you ask for?

OTHER REVIEWS
SLEGEST: Vidsyn (2016)
BLACK METAL - Between crawling Doom and Black Metal fed on the most stripped Thrash, Slegest forges an art engulfed by winter, prisoner of a gloomy husk of despair.
EVERGREY: The Storm Within (2016)
PROGRESSIVE METAL - Well decided to remain among the spearheads of the melodic power metal, Evergrey offers us a "The Storm Within" of great class, modern, powerful, massive and terribly addictive.
