Even though "Blood" allowed its progenitors to reach the top floor in terms of public success leading to a signature with the powerful Atlantic Records, it is permissible to prefer its predecessor, "A Star-Crossed Wasteland", less personal perhaps but rich of a charm which evaporated a little two years later. What about "Black Widow", the Americans' fifth album?
Unsurprisingly, this one digs the same furrow as its predecessor, promise of a programmed commercial success which shouldn't change the deal for In This Moment, a nice phenomenon for some, unbearable for others. If they were not blinded by their bad faith, they would have to admit that they are wrong.
Maria Brink, around whom the band's image has (necessarily) been built, is part of this cleavage, her versatile vocals being able to seduce as much as to repel ('Big Bad Wolf'). But the beautiful girl isn't just a doll and shines in all registers, a panther in turn aggressive or charming, a path we like to see her take because it reveals the full extent of her talent like 'The Fighter', a (false) ballad with funerary accents. In any case, she ends up triumphing, dominating her prey like a praying mantis.
The vocal lines are not the only good point to be put at the credit of the band, which also made notable efforts in terms of writing, giving birth to more structured and elaborated compositions that explode the simple framework of Metalcore to which they are attached. 'Sex Metal Barbie' or 'Bones' thus testify to a quality of architecture that we didn't think the Americans were really capable of, even if we always recognized a potential that many refused to acknowledge.
More mature, In This Moment should silence its detractors with this "Black Widow", an opus certainly calibrated for the US airwaves, but holder of a real intelligence from a band that has a vision of its art light years away from the mainstream. - Official website
