In three albums and a Dantean live Alter Bridge has achieved since its debut in 2004 a quite impressive flawless carrier. The band has shown that when it comes to alternative rock, it has a definite advantage thanks to Mark Tremonti's inspired riffs and Myles Kennedy's warm voice.
The band has hardly changed its recipe with "Fortress", its 4th album, still straddling between an energetic rock and a heavy metal. The heavy side is even a little more assertive here with quite a few powerful riffs. But you have to be reassured, Alter Bridge has kept its melodic side sometimes close to the pop.
The album evolves between direct tracks and more sought-after compositions. In this category 'Fortress','Calm The Fire' and 'Waters Rising' are the best tracks. Carried by irresistible choruses and music with atmospheric intonations, these songs are perfect hits to be covered in chorus. 'Waters Rising' shows in particular a beautiful rise in power carried by a Kennedy very comfortable in a style more pop rock than metal. And 'All Ends Well' and 'Lover' are two beautiful ballads. The first is warm and engaging while the second offers an alternation between calm and power with a feeling that Aerosmith would not deny. On the other hand, the heavier titles are also having an effect. 'Cry of Achilles' and its epic introduction, 'Addicted To Pain' or 'Farther Than The Sun' and'Peace Is Broken' are excellent songs served by catchy choruses.
With "Fortress", Alter Bridge once again confirms that it is one of the best rock/metal bands to emerge in recent years. He signs another brilliant album and leads us to believe that he has not finished making people talk about him, as his potential still seems so important. - Official website
