Flamborough Head is a band that shows a good steadiness. Since 1998, the quintet has expressed itself in a musical style well anchored in the neo-progressive tinted with some folk elements, and since the second album the illustration is entrusted to the same graphic designer: Theo Spaay. The composition of the band is also relatively stable since it has only known two changes in 15 years, namely, the arrival of Margriet Boomsma and her bewitching voice in 2002, and that of the excellent guitarist Gert Polkermanen 2009.
It is then with no fear of being disoriented that we can dive into the listening of "Lost In Time" which begins with the eponymous title. This first composition starts in a romantic symphonic atmosphere based on the string instrument sounds distilled by Edo Spanninga's keyboards. A beautiful piece of more than twelve minutes that Margriet Boomsma illuminates with her crystalline singing, taking the listener on a musical journey that ends with a beautiful virtual guitar duo. Flamborough Head then offers us another excellent track with "The Trapper". Symphonic as one could wish, this track alternates bucolic passages where the flute replaces the vocals and twirling flights of fancy full of guitar solos - this Polkerman is really a virtuoso and an inspired musician.
If we omit the 'short' "I'll Take The Blame" and its six and a half minutes, the rest of the album consists of three other compositions lasting nine, ten and eleven minutes. Each one is built of slow parts and others more cheerful. Here piano/vocal passages will evoke a bit of Renaissance classicism, here the flute and acoustic guitar will recall Jethro Tull. The least we can say is that the Dutch are giving us a real treat in terms of quality and quantity and this "Lost In Time" is probably the best they have done since "Defining The Legacy".
If you don't know Flamborough Head, this album is a good introduction into a symphonic universe enlightened by Margriet Boomsma's magical voice and performed by excellent instrumentalists. Lovers of guitars like Gilmour or Rothery, please listen carefully to Mr. Polkerman's solos, you should be won over. - Official website
