"Despite drawing inspiration a little too closely from Genesis and Marillion, Citizen Cain succeeds in delivering an endearing album full of beautiful melodies."

Originally released in 1993, "Serpents in Camouflage" is Citizen Cain's first album, which F2 Records has been smart enough to reissue in a remastered version, completed with a bonus CD containing four previously unreleased tracks from 1991 demo tapes.

Since the release of this first opus, it has been said, and repeated with each new release, how much the compositions of Citizen Cain are marked by the imprint of 70's progressive rock. Cyrus' voice has often been compared to that of Peter Gabriel from the early Genesis era. With hindsight (the advantage of reviewing an album that's already 20 years old!), it's more Marillion that "Serpents in Camouflage" will bring to mind, "Script For A Jesters Tear" to be precise. There's a keyboard passage in 'The Gathering', around 7'30, which is very reminiscent of the start of "Garden Party".

Despite these inspirations, Citizen Cain manages to deliver an interesting album, full of beautiful, well-played melodies. From the very first track, Alistair MacGregor's very 'Steve Rothery' sound and feel seduce the listener. Four tracks are longer than ten minutes, and not one of these epic compositions suffers from tiresome length. The climax is reached with "Serpents in Camouflage", which gives the album its title, and can be compared to a little "Supper's Ready".

If the effects of the remastering are not immediately obvious, a closer listen reveals a "cleaner" sound and better dynamics. And if we add to this 'dusting off' the bonus CD with the previously unreleased 'Nightlights', there's enough to make any fan fall in love!

MOTLEY CRUE: Mötley Crüe (1994)
HEAVY METAL - The only Mötley Crüe album with John Corabi does not deserve to be praised, but it can at least be rehabilitated.
FLAMBOROUGH HEAD: Lost In Time (2013)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Guitar lovers like Gilmour or Rothery, listen to this symphonic "Lost in Time" illuminated by the magical voice of Margriet Boomsma and served by excellent instrumentalists.
