Six years is the time Ozzy Osbourne took to release his 8th studio album, Down To Earth. It has to be said that our man has been very busy since he launched his travelling festival in 1996, Ozzfest, which was to meet with considerable success and he met up with his Black Sabbath. Sabbath's failure to write an album will push Osbourne to finish his opus.
The album featured a classic line-up with Robert Trujillo on bass, Mike Bordin on drums and Zakk Wylde on guitar. The latter had left Ozzy in 1995 and formed his band, Black Label Society, in 1998. He joined the band for the recording, the record having been composed by Ozzy and outside contributors used to write for many bands.
Down To Earth is an efficient album, calibrated to please to the greatest number of people but that lacks the emotional strength of its predecessors and big unifying hits. Ozzy does Ozzy, efficiently but without flame or genius. In fact, the album unfolds in a linear way with some good things... And especially some not so good things. The heavy tracks are classic but work such as "Get Me Through", "Facing Hell" or "Junkie", served by a heavy sound that enhances them. On his side Wylde does the job on guitar distilling riffs and solos with class as usual. On the other hand, there's some very banal stuff like the ballad "Dreamer", made for radios, which was a hit despite its syrupy and even slimy character, and the tracks "Running Out Of Time", "No Easy Way Out" and "You Know... Pt 1", straight out of a catalogue that any artist could have taken to complete a record.
