"Alternative 4" is the album that confirms Anathema's transition towards a more atmospheric music, an evolution started with "Eternity" two years before.
By far the most stripped down and depressive of the band, Anathema is still looking for itself and hasn't reached its objectives yet, but we discover Vincent Cavanagh who flies over this record with all his class with his so expressive vocals, regularly becoming moving.
We can also appreciate the talent of composition of the group which already proposes simple musics but with strong and often memorable melodies. The premises of the style that Anathema will forge the following years is recognizable, alternating acoustic passages and heavy riffs. The piano is regularly heard to bring a little more melancholy to a set that already did not breathe the joy of living. It is difficult to smile when listening to the intimate "Lost Control" or the superb but very short "Inner Silence".
If sadness or even despair are elements that give you emotions, "Alternative 4" is clearly made for you. A beautiful work, certainly very dark and depressive, but presenting an outstanding band that will only get better with time. - Official website
