The story of Mark Knopfler, born in Glasgow on 12 August 1949, began in his teens, when he developed a deep passion for the guitar. Inspired by blues and rock 'n' roll, he honed his skills and, in the late 1970s, founded Dire Straits with his younger brother David Knopfler. The band's eponymous debut album, released in 1978, marked the start of an exceptional career.
Dire Straits made a name for themselves with their album, 'Making Movies' (1980), which included the hit single 'Romeo and Juliet'. However, it was 'Brothers in Arms' (1985) that catapulted them to international superstardom. This album contains timeless classics such as 'Money for Nothing' and 'Walk of Life'. Mark Knopfler's distinctive finger-picking guitar style and melodic songwriting have become synonymous with the band's sound.
Mark Knopfler's solo career took off after Dire Straits disbanded in 1993. He has continued to show his versatility, exploring a range of genres from folk and country to jazz and Celtic influences. Albums such as "Golden Heart" (1996), "Sailing to Philadelphia" (2000) and "Shangri-La" (2004) cemented his reputation as a solo artist. In addition to his success as a musician, Mark Knopfler has also composed soundtracks for several films, including "Local Hero" (1983), "The Princess Bride" (1987) and "Des hommes d'influence" (1998).
Mark Knopfler's distinctive guitar sound, characterised by finger-picking and his red Stratocaster, has inspired countless musicians around the world. He has received numerous awards, including Grammy Awards and the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of his contribution to music.
