W.A.S.P. is an American heavy metal band known not only for its provocations, but also for having released some of the genre's best albums in the 80s and 90s.
TORPEDO - 08.12.2023
W.A.S.P. was formed in Los Angeles in 1982 by singer/guitarist Blackie Lawless, guitarist Chris Holmes, bassist Randy Piper and drummer Tony Richards. Lawless has been the band's only permanent member since its formation.

The band released their self-titled debut album in 1984, which was a commercial and critical success, and included the singles 'I Wanna Be Somebody' and 'L.O.V.E. Machine'. W.A.S.P. quickly became known for its shock imagery, which included make-up, blood, bones and circular saw-shaped briefs. The band is often criticized for being provocative, but Lawless says the imagery is simply a means of conveying the band's messages.

W.A.S.P. continued to enjoy success in the 1980s, releasing albums such as "The Last Command" (1985), "Inside the Electric Circus" (1986) and "The Crimson Idol" (1992). At the time, they were one of the most popular bands of the glam metal movement, alongside Mötley Crüe, Poison and Ratt.

Although W.A.S.P.'s fame waned in the 2000s, the band never stopped producing albums and touring. Moving away from their shock imagery, they adopted a darker, more mature heavy metal style. After a poorly-received two-volume concept album, "The Neon God", W.A.S.P. released the album "Dominator" in 2006, which brought them back to success.

W.A.S.P.'s career began to falter after 2006, with the release of just two albums: "Babylon" in 2009 and the excellent "Golgotha" in 2015, the band's last proper studio album to date.

DID YOU KNOW?

W.A.S.P. was known for stage performances that often included fireworks, explosions and fake blood. In 1984, the band was even accused of burning a cat alive on stage during a concert in Toronto.

In 1986, the band was accused of promoting violence against women on its album "Inside the Electric Circus". The band was boycotted by several radio and TV stations.

Although the band has long denied it, W.A.S.P. stands for "We Are Sexual Perverts".

Before creating W.A.S.P., Blackie Lawless formed the group Sister with Nikki Sixx (Mötley Crüe) in 1976, then Circus Circus in 1979.

W.A.S.P. was the target of numerous attacks by the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) led by Tipper Gore.
