Judas Priest is a British traditional heavy metal band founded in 1970 by guitarist K. K. Downing and bassist Ian Hill.
Their first album, "Rocka Rolla", was based on hard rock and had strong reminiscences of progressive rock, with long, soaring tracks. But from "Sad wings of destiny" onwards, the style hardened considerably, defining the main characteristics of heavy metal. From then on, Judas Priest's success grew worldwide.
Judas Priest was one of the most influential bands of the 1980s. Singer Rob Halford's voice, which can span several octaves, combined with the heavy metal style is one of the main characteristics. The band propelled the Arena Metal genre, characterised by pyrotechnic performances in hockey arenas around the world. Judas Priest also launched the heavy metal biker craze, complete with leathers and studded metal bracelets. But above all, it was their musical style, characterised by the use of two solo guitarists (like Thin Lizzy or Iron Maiden), in the service of refined compositions, and the quality of their live performances (several live albums attest to this, notably Unleashed in the East) that made Judas Priest one of the most important heavy metal bands.
The "Turbo" album saw a move towards more commercial metal with the use of synth guitars (a first for a heavy metal band), while the "Painkiller" album marked a return to a much more aggressive style, influenced by thrash metal. This shift coincided with the arrival of drummer Scott Travis, a notorious fan of the double pedal and successor to drummers such as Lars Ulrich and Dave Lombardo.
Singer Rob Halford (nicknamed 'The Metal God' by fans) left the band in 1991 to pursue a solo career, replaced by Tim 'Ripper' Owens on the 'Jugulator' album. Halford returned to the band in July 2003. After a notable appearance at Ozzfest in 2003-2004, Judas Priest toured the world with the Angel Of Retribution tour, following the release of the album of the same name.
Their concept album, "Nostradamus", was released in 2008. It looks at the prophecies of the famous seer, demonstrating their willingness to experiment. The accompanying tour brings this elaborate concept to life with a visually stunning show.
A major change comes in 2011 with the departure of long-time guitarist K.K. Downing. Richie Faulkner took over as lead guitarist and the band continued to build momentum. Their 2012 album, 'Redeemer of Souls', marked a return to a more traditional heavy metal sound. It was followed by a world tour and 2015's 'Battle Cry' EP, featuring new tracks and reimagined classics. 2018 saw another critical and commercial success with 'Firepower', the best-selling album since 1990.
The band's 50th anniversary, in 2021, is the occasion for a celebration. Judas Priest released the EP "50 Heavy Metal Years" and announced a new studio album, "Invincible Shield", to be released in 2024. The latter was another success, successfully synthesising all the band's periods.
