Queens of the Stone Age is an American rock band formed in Palm Desert, California, in 1996. The band was founded by singer and guitarist Josh Homme, who has been the only constant member through multiple lineup changes. Since 2013, the lineup has consisted of Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar, lap steel, keyboards, percussion, backing vocals), Michael Shuman (bass guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Dean Fertita (keyboards, guitar, percussion, backing vocals), and Jon Theodore (drums, percussion)

Queens of the Stone Age was formed after the dissolution of Homme's previous band, Kyuss. The band's music is often described as a blend of hard rock, stoner rock and alternative rock, with elements of punk rock, blues and even electronic music. It is characterized by heavy riffs, complex rhythms and Homme's distinctive vocals. The band's sound has been influenced by a wide range of artists, including Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Iggy Pop and David Bowie.

Queens of the Stone Age's self-titled debut album was released in 1998. Homme handles all the instruments except the drums, which are played by Alfredo Hernández. The album was well received by critics and helped establish the band's unique sound.

Queens of the Stone Age enjoyed success with their second album, “Rated R” (2000), which featured guest appearances by Mark Lanegan and Matt Cameron. The single 'The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret' became a hit on alternative rock radio.

The band's third album, “Songs for the Deaf” (2002), was even more successful, reaching the top 20 of the Billboard 200 and producing the hits 'No One Knows' and 'Go With the Flow'. The album's special guest appearance by Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters on drums consolidated Queens of the Stone Age's status as one of the leading rock bands of the 2000s.

Five further studio albums follow: “Lullabies to Paralyze” (2005), “Era Vulgaris” (2007), “Like Clockwork” (2013), “Villains” (2017) and “In Times New Roman” (2023). (2023). All these albums have been critically acclaimed and have reinforced the band's reputation as one of the most innovative and influential of their generation.

Queens of the Stone Age has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards and won two of them, Best Hard Rock Performance for 'No One Knows' in 2003 and Best Rock Album for 'Like Clockwork' in 2014. The band has also won acclaim for its live shows, known for their energy and intensity.

DID YOU KNOW?

Queens of the Stone Age originally called themselves Gamma Ray before having to change their name, as another power metal band had already adopted it.

The band was almost called “Kings of the Stone Age”, but Josh Homme thought it was too macho, so he changed it to the female version.
