Dokken is an American heavy metal band formed in 1978 in Los Angeles, California. The band was founded by singer Don Dokken and guitarist George Lynch, who were both iconic figures on the rock scene in the early '80s.
The band first came to prominence with the release of their debut album, entitled "Breaking the Chains", in 1983. It caught the attention of heavy metal fans with songs like 'Breaking the Chains' and 'In the Middle'. However, it wasn't until their second album, 'Tooth and Nail' (1984), that Dokken really enjoyed commercial success. The album went platinum in the U.S. and contained several hits, including 'Alone Again' and 'Just Got Lucky'. Dokken's sound is characterized by powerful guitar riffs, catchy melodies and Don Dokken's distinctive vocals.
In 1985, Dokken released their third album, "Under Lock and Key", which was another commercial success. The album was certified platinum and spawned hits such as 'In My Dreams' and 'It's Not Love'. The band continued to release several successful albums throughout the 1980s, including "Back for the Attack" (1987), which was their biggest commercial success with singles such as 'Dream Warriors' and 'Burning Like a Flame'.
Despite their success, tensions began to develop within the band, particularly between Don Dokken and George Lynch. These eventually led to the band's split in 1989, after the release of 'Beast from the East', a live album recorded during their Japanese tour.
After the split, Don Dokken continued to release albums under the Dokken name, but without the band's original line-up. Meanwhile, George Lynch formed his own band, Lynch Mob, and pursued a solo career.
In 1993, Dokken briefly reunited to release a new album, "Dysfunctional". However, internal tensions soon resurfaced, and the band split up again shortly afterwards.
Since then, Dokken has reunited several times for touring and recording, although the original band members have never managed to maintain long-term stability. Their latest album to date, "Heaven Comes Down", released in 2023, shows a band still with a certain ability to write catchy, melodic songs in the pure 80s tradition.
