Therion is a Swedish symphonic metal band formed in 1987 by guitarist and vocalist Christofer Johnsson. Initially rooted in death metal, the band gradually evolved towards a more eclectic sound, incorporating elements of melodic metal, classical and folk music.
Therion's lyrical themes have always been rich and varied, drawing inspiration from mythology, the occult, religion and literature. Their albums often tell coherent stories, weaving together themes of ancient civilizations, paganism and the occult.
Their early demos and albums featured a raw, aggressive sound, with complex guitar riffs and blast beats. But in 1996, Therion embarked on a radical transformation, introducing symphonic elements into their music. The albums "Theli" (1996) and "Deggial" (2000), the latter recorded with an orchestra, mark a turning point in Therion's career, blending death metal with orchestral arrangements, choirs and operatic vocals.
"Sirius B" and "Lemuria" were released simultaneously in 2004, featuring the participation of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and a 32-member choir. The two albums reveal Therion's two facets, one symphonic and the other more extreme.
Always eager for novelty and originality, in 2012 the band released an album of covers of French songs from the 60s and 70s. Not really understood - and rightly so - by fans, it failed to live up to expectations. It was followed, after a break of almost 7 years, by "Beloved Superchrist", an exuberant blockbuster of over three hours, 46 tracks and 29 singers.
In 2021, Therion kicks off its "Leviathan" trilogy with the same ingredients that made the band such a success. Mystical, symphonic and melodic, the three parts are all a success and allow Therion to regain its former aura.

 The band's first name was "Blitzkrieg", then became "Megatherion", based on the album title To Mega Therion by Swiss heavy metal band Celtic Frost, and finally changed to Therion.
