Symphony X is an American progressive metal band formed in New Jersey in 1994. The band consists of keyboardist Michael Pinnella, guitarist Michael Romeo, bassist Michael Lepond, drummer Jason Rullo and vocalist Russell Allen. Their music is characterized by complex compositions, virtuoso performances and elaborate symphonic arrangements.
The band was formed when Michael Romeo recruited Michael Pinnella to play keyboard in his musical project. They soon realized that they had a certain musical chemistry and decided to form a band in their own right. With the addition of Russell Allen on vocals, Michael Lepond on bass and Jason Rullo on drums, Symphony X's classic line-up was complete.
Symphony X released their first album, entitled "Symphony X", in 1994, but it was with their second album, "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" (1997), that they began to gain recognition and the attention of progressive metal fans. This album won critical acclaim for its musical complexity, its blend of symphonic and metal, and Russell Allen's impressive vocal performance.
The band followed this up with albums such as "Twilight in Olympus" (1998) and "V: The New Mythology Suite" (2000), which cemented their reputation as one of progressive metal's leading bands. These albums demonstrated the band's technical virtuosity, as well as their ability to tell epic stories through their music.
Without deviating from their initial trajectory, Symphony X continued to release critically acclaimed albums such as "The Odyssey" (2002), "Paradise Lost" (2007) and "Iconoclast" (2011) and finally "Underworld" in 2015.
In 2017, the band decided to take a break, its musicians all having numerous parallel projects to pursue.
