One fine day in 1996, Tricky Beans was born in the north of Finland. It released 3 demos, then after an initial change of personnel became Tricky Means. In 1999, they recorded a 'fullmoon' demo, which was signed to the Finnish label Spinefarm. It was at this point that the band took the name Sonata Arctica, and was made up of Tony Kakko (vocals, keyboards), Jani Liimatainen (guitar), Tommy Portimo (drums) and Janne Kivilahti (bass).
Their first CD, "Ecliptica", was released in Finland in autumn 1999, but was soon distributed outside the country. It enabled them to take part in two tribute CDs, Helloween's 'Keepers of Jericho' and Scorpions' 'A tribute to the Scorpions'. Tony Kakko then decided to devote himself solely to singing, and to this end hired Mikko Härkin on keyboards. Marko Paasikoski (former founder of Tricky Beans) took Janne's place on bass.
The next album, "Silence", was released first in Japan, where the band met with great success, with other countries being served a little later. 2002 saw the band's consecration with numerous concerts. A live CD 'Songs of silence - Live in Tokyo' was released following this tour.
The following decade saw Sonata Arctica reach new heights. Albums such as 'Winterheart's Guild' and 'Reckoning Night' explored the themes of fantasy and science fiction, which complemented their music perfectly.
While remaining true to their power metal roots, Sonata Arctica were not afraid to experiment. "Unia" and "The Days of Grays" demonstrated a slightly more progressive approach, with some songs incorporating orchestral elements.
The band's adventure continued with albums such as "Stones Grow Her Name", "Pariah's Child" and "The Ninth Hour". The band underwent some changes, with the arrival of guitarist Elias Viljanen and keyboardist Henrik Klingenberg.
In 2019, they released "Talviyö", a concept album steeped in Finnish mythology. This strengthened their connection with their homeland and their unique way of telling stories through music.
In 2024, Sonata Arctica released their last studio album to date, "Clear Cold Beyond", a testament to their enduring legacy on the power metal scene that brings together the best of what they have been able to offer to date.
