Duran Duran is a British new wave and synth-pop band who had a runaway success in the 80s.
TORPEDO - 18.01.2024
Duran Duran was born in Birmingham in 1978. The original line-up consisted of Simon Le Bon (vocals), Nick Rhodes (keyboards), John Taylor (bass), Andy Taylor (guitar) and Roger Taylor (drums).

Their self-titled debut album, 'Duran Duran', was released in 1981. It included the single 'Planet Earth', which broke into the UK Top 20, and 'Girls on Film', which finished in the Top 5. A first tour followed, the 'Faster Than Light Tour', which wasn't exactly a success but gave Duran Duran a chance to gain experience.

The group's worldwide success was confirmed with the release of "Rio" in 1982. The album included such iconic tracks as 'Hungry Like the Wolf', 'Save a Prayer' and the title track 'Rio'. The accompanying music videos, visually stunning, became an integral part of Duran Duran's image and popularity.

In 1983, 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger' introduced a more refined sound with hits such as 'Union of the Snake', 'New Moon on Monday' and 'The Reflex'. The album featured a fusion of new wave, rock and funk elements, and 'The Reflex' reached number one in the US. In 1985, the band released 'A View to a Kill', for the soundtrack to the James Bond film, 'Dangerously Yours', which reached number 1 worldwide.

In 1985, at the height of Duran Duran's fame, the band split in two to form Arcadia and The Power Station. They reformed a year later without Roger and Andy Taylor. Guitarist Warren Cuccurullo joined the band. Duran Duran then released three albums, "Notorious" (1986), "Big Thing" (1988) and "Liberty" (1990), all of which failed to live up to expectations.

In 1993, Duran Duran released another self-titled album. To distinguish it from the first, it was nicknamed "The Wedding Album", in reference to the cover. It contained the hit 'Ordinary World' and saw the band return to the forefront of the music scene.

The following albums, 'Medazzaland' (1997) and 'Pop Trash' (2000), showed a band in decline, trying to evolve their music without any real success. In 2001, however, former members John, Andy and Roger Taylor returned to the group.

With a reconstituted original line-up, Duran Duran returned to form, releasing "Astronaut" in 2004 with the singles "Sunrise" and "What Happens Tomorrow". Despite some successes such as 2015's 'Paper Gods', an album featuring a number of guest stars, and the single 'invisible' from 2021's 'Future Past', the band failed to recapture the acclaim it had enjoyed 30 years earlier.

With a career spanning several generations, Duran Duran remains an influential and iconic presence in the world of pop and rock music.
