Hailing from Savannah, Georgia, Baroness' origins date back to 2003, when vocalist and guitarist John Baizley, guitarist Brian Blickle, bassist Summer Welch and drummer Allen Blickle decided to form a band that would push the boundaries of heavy music.
Baroness' music is a blend of sludge metal, stoner rock and post-metal, characterized by Baizley's soaring vocals, Blickle's melodic guitar work, Welch's driving bass lines and Allen Blickle's thunderous drums.
In 2004, Baroness released their self-titled debut EP, combining heavy riffs, progressive compositions and atmospheric soundscapes. They then signed with Relapse Records and began work on their debut album, entitled "The Red Album". Released in 2007, it marks a milestone for the band, showcasing their refined songwriting and expanding their sonic palette.
In 2009, Baroness released their second album, "Blue Record", produced by John Congleton, known for his work with artists such as The Roots. The album once again demonstrates the band's ability to blend heavy riffs with melodic sensibilities, while incorporating elements of psychedelia and progressive rock. "Blue Record" was even more critically acclaimed than its predecessor, and is considered one of the 20 best metal albums in history by LA Weekly.
In 2012, Baroness released their third studio album, "Yellow-Green", which further explores their diverse musical influences and highlights the maturity of their songwriting. The album features more experimental arrangements and greater emphasis on melody, cementing Baroness' reputation as an avant-garde metal band.
In 2012, Baroness' career suffered a huge setback. Their tour bus fell off an overpass, seriously injuring most of the musicians. Baroness is forced to cancel its final tour dates and postpone the release of its next album. Allen Blickle and Matt Maggioni left the band the following year.
Despite this setback, Baroness refused to give up. Thanks to Baizley's unwavering determination and the support of their fans, the band reformed and returned to the studio in 2014. They release their fourth album, "Purple", in 2015, demonstrating their resilience. Baroness continues to release adventurous albums, with "Gold & Grey" in 2019 and "Stone" in 2023.
