The new year 2021 of TOP WAVES started in the most beautiful way by naming as first winner Vanden Plas and the second part of "The Ghost Xperiment".

And the votes of the month of February are just as tempting by offering us an extremely heterogeneous selection with the new albums of Evergrey, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Moonspell, W.E.T., Wardruna but also the ones of headliners like Foo Fighters, Weezer and of course its lot of hexagonal releases which are numerous this month.

TOP WAVES GENERAL - FEBRUARY 2021

At the top of this ranking, we find the French band LizZard who crush the competition.

"Very similar to Tool at the beginning and then taking a more atmospheric way, the French band started a more direct turn in "Shift".
In this new album, "it is the song aspect which is put forward and for which LizZard delivers a copy full of accuracy, of which each passage is obvious. One can look hard enough, but there is no flaw to be deplored.

"If each record of the Frenchmen brings its contribution in the evolution of the band, "Eroded" can be considered as a referential record which could mark a decisive step in the turn of the future works of the band": "the first big sensation of this year 2021."
(Nuno777)

LIZZARD Eroded

In the second row, we find W.E.T. who has been "regaling us with his productions" for a dozen years.

"With one foot firmly planted in the 80's and the other rooted in the modern world, "W.E.T. is an energetic and addictive melodic hard rock band.
"Although it is not easy to make cohabit classicism and modernism, W.E.T. manages to find this beautiful balance. Moreover, he succeeds in the challenge of proposing compositions that are insidious enough to remain attractive over time, which is not necessarily the primary quality of the musical style."

"The fourth opus and fourth ace out of the Swedes' sleeve, this "Retransmission" is once again a W.E.T. success."
(Lynott)

W.E.T. Retransmission

Two bands share the third place, Meer is the first of them.
If the Norwegian group can evoke Kansas, The Addiction Dream or The Dear Hunter, the compositions of the group without being too long are characterized by "obvious vocal harmonies" made possible by "the variety of tone and the complementarity of the two singers - Johanne and Knut Kippersund - [who] are marvelous".

In conclusion, Meer offers an album which, "without reaching the emotional vertigo of complex progressive opuses, is nevertheless a pleasant and comfortable surprise, with a vaguely nostalgic addictive charm".
(Abaddon)

MEER Playing House

Third place shared with Moonspell. After the parenthesis "1755", Moonspell returns "to a turning point" of his career and in particular "the beginning of the end of his musical career".

"To express this, the power is put aside in favor of melodies and atmospheres." "The music becomes progressive, the shadow of Pink Floyd looms."
"The melancholy that emerges also evokes Queensrÿche's "Promised Land" for a result of rare beauty."

"Highly introspective, "Hermitage" is a journey into the heart of Moonspell's soul" "a splendid offering from [a band] that adds progressive touches to its gothic metal."
(Noise)

TOP WAVES METAL - FEBRUARY 2021

Looking at the general ranking, without surprise, LizZard and Moonspell share the first two places of the February TOP WAVES METAL ranking. But who will complete the podium?

"Two years ago, the Music Waves team was ecstatic to hear "The Atlantic". Evergrey returns with "Escape of the Phoenix" "written during the confinement of early 2020, with a desire to be more direct." "This frontal approach is very present throughout the record".

"Musically, one must admit that the Swedes are set like music paper and that the wheels of the machine are perfectly oiled." (Darialys)

TOP WAVES ROCK FÉVRIER 2021

Contrary to the METAL TOP WAVES, the first place is not taken by W.E.T. or Meer who share the second place. Both bands are behind Anneke Van Giersbergen.

And it's a fair return when we know that Anneke is "one of the most involved artists of the current rock-metal scene by the diversity and the quality of her personal projects as well as by the aura of the muse that she embodies in some of the most talented composers of the progressive sphere (Devin Townsend, Arjen Lucassen, Danny Cavanagh)."

"If nocturnal feelings inspired the composition of these pieces, Anneke Van Giersbergen never lets herself be locked up in the inner darkness and delivers an intimate and cathartic album certainly crossed by melancholy but cradled by a positive spirit"
(Nuno777)

LizArd, of course !
