We had left last month by noting the unpredictability of the TOP WAVES which had honored the last Blue Öyster Cult "The Symbol Remains" and whose podiums had refused to a major release of the year namely "Power Up" of AC/DC.

In these conditions it is legitimate to wait feverishly for the last vote of the year 2020 which should not be like the others especially as the selection is quite tempting with releases from The Smashing Pumpkins and Midnight Oil, from the leaders of the melodic death scene with Dark Tranquillity and Soilwork, one of the heavyweights of progressive metal with Royal Hunt, Armored Saint, Phil Campbell and his bastards, the super groups Killer be Killed, the rap metal sensation Hollywood Undead without forgetting the innumerable releases made in France.

But before going into the latest ranking of your site, as is now tradition, let's see what the hexagonal charts have in store for us.
While it had taken the first place last month, "Power Up" from AC/DC is still at the 10th position and we have to go to the 83rd position to find "Letter to You" from Bruce Springsteen and... that's it! You'll agree, in these conditions, we will console ourselves by saluting the beautiful 30th place to which the last Paul McCartney "McCartney III" is clinging.

TOP GENERAL DECEMBER 2020

We now know that the TOP WAVES are unpredictable and it is natural that the last ranking of the year 2020 reserves its share of surprises... the first of them is that the first place of the ranking is not awarded to one album but two !!!

The first of the two laureates is none other than Plini, considered as the future of the instrumental guitar and in particular by a master in the matter namely Steve Vai.
"Since the release of the excellent EP "Sunhead", we have been waiting impatiently for the future of the guitar to become its present. This is done with the release of the second album of the Sydney prodigy, "Impulse Voices", which is the perfect synthesis of tradition and modernity".
And where "other guitarists spend a lifetime searching for the identity of their music and finding the right balance between technique and musicality, Plini has had his own style from the beginning, a style that is immediately recognizable and that makes him much more than a guitarist".
In the same way, "much more than an instrumental guitar album, "Impulse Voices" is a true musical work in which each part is orchestrated to create aerial and delicate atmospheres ('Perfume') based on a precise melodic research".
"With his singular personality and his fabulous talent as a composer, Plini reinvents jazz-rock and establishes himself as the most gifted guitarist of his generation." (Newf)

PLINI Impulse Voices

In a radically different register, Soilwork is also at the top of this TOP WAVES. Which is a surprise! Indeed, "one year after the release of the steamroller "Verkligheten", Soilwork takes advantage of the end of the year to release not an album, but rather a new 38-minute EP" "A Whisp of the Atlantic".
EP which contains the eponymous 16 minutes title "serious pretender to the title of "song of the year 2020". If "Verkligheten" had a devastating power sometimes somewhat redundant despite a highly mastered recipe, the first track of this new EP is a marvel of diversity".
"A Whisp Of The Atlantic" stands out as the surprise of this end of the year, built around a dazzling lead track and four other peripheral tracks more concise and catchy, always as technical and titanic. The progressive dimension of the eponymous title seems to open exciting perspectives of evolution for the band if it wishes to move towards new paths in the future" (Darialys)

SOILWORK A Whisp Of The Atlantic

And it is Pyramaze who completes this already tempting podium with an "Epitah" "probably the best production of the Danes to date."
"Melodically stunning, the tracks follow one another without slowing down" and "question references, imagine that Evergrey, Cyhra, Kamelot and Dynazty have joined hands and tuned to offer the most addictive melodies they know how to make."
In short, "This "Epitaph" is [...] a little bomb of melodic metal that cheerfully rises to the top of the genre." "Pyramaze, even if he has somewhat abandoned his past progressive desires here, has undoubtedly crossed a milestone. Don't miss this beautiful surprise" (Lynott)

TOP WAVES ROCK DECEMBER 2020

Since no album of the rock selection is in the general TOP WAVES, it is with great curiosity that we scrutinize the ranking of this selection.
At the top of the TOP WAVES, we find Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons and "We're The Bastards" [which] reminds us of a certain "We Are Motörhead" (2000) or the "(We Are) The Road Crew" present on "Ace Of Spades" (1980)."
So much so that in the end "the Welsh quintet offers us a new flawless performance, confirming its influences while moving away from them and multiplying its experiences with talent". In short, "With "We're The Bastards", Phil Campbell And The Bastards Sons logically establishes himself as the natural heir to Motörhead, preferring to perpetuate the flame by renewing it rather than duplicating it". (Loloceltic)

PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS We're The Bastards

In second place and just a short distance away from the winner is Daniel Tompkins, who returns to us "Ruins", barely a year after "Castles", knowing that the newcomer is a revisit of his predecessor.
But "more than a revisiting of 'Castles', "Ruins" is a complete reinterpretation of it, so that it can effortlessly be considered a new album in its own right".
"The result is brilliant in every way. Darker, more powerful, strangely more melancholic, all the tracks take on a particular flavor, sublimated by Daniel Tompkins' exceptional voice and his incomparable talent for combining power and softness".
"By revisiting his own music, Daniel Tompkins gives it more than a second breath, he literally transcends it with this intelligent and addictive album." (Newf)

DANIEL TOMPKINS Ruins

To complete this podium, we find Solstafir and "Endless Twilight of Codependent Love".
"Sculpting at the beginning a rather classical Viking black metal, it is by moving away from its extreme roots [...] that the band led by Aðalbjörn Tryggvason [...] finally forged its identity".
"The work exudes more charm than its predecessor, while being in line with the artistic and qualitative continuity of "Ótta"." (Childeric Thor)
